Basket Museum Presents Talks, Parade
At 92-years-old, islander Reggie Reed has decades of experience making Nantucket baskets, and he has played a role in the education of several contemporary basketmakers. His long time friend, Karol Lindquist, is one such basketmaker who was taught by Reggie when she first decided to try her hand at basketry.
This Sunday, August 19, at 2 p.m., the two will share their history as well as some enjoyable antidotes and perspectives on the currents path of basketmaking. The presentation will be held in the Great Hall of the Nantucket Atheneum. Tickets are free of charge and available at the Atheneum at 1 India Street and at the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum, 49 Union Street.
Thursday, August 23, also at 2 p.m., the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum will present its third Annual Purse Parade.
“This annual event really ties into our exhibit this year,” says Museum Director Albert L’Etoile. “The purse Parade is all about baskets and their owners. The women who have attended the Purse Parade in years past love sharing the stories behind their baskets. They are very sentimental about their purse baskets. And it is wonderful to have Lee Ann Papale available and adding helpful hints regarding the care and cleaning of Nantucket baskets.”
In the past several women shared stories of receiving their Lightship Basket Purse when they graduated from high school. Other women have shared stories of Lightship Basket purses that were passed down from one generation to another, as part of a family legacy.
Another important aspects of the 3rd Annual Purse Parade is the return of Lee Ann Papale presenting hints on how to care for and clean lightship baskets. Participants will have the opportunity to ask Papale specific questions about their purses.
The 3rd Annual Purse Parade is free for individuals who carry their Lightship Basket Purse and for members of the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum. The general public is welcome to participate, with Museum Admission. Light refreshments will be served.
