Impressions of Our Island
Every year as deep autumn tones replace the bright greens of summer, we have the pleasure of looking at scores of photos sent in by readers entering our annual Yesterday’s Island Photo Contest.
This year we received nearly 600 entries, the most ever sent in, and the images were more varied than usual. We still viewed photos of Brant Point, Sankaty Light, sunsets, and the wharves, but many were taken from uncommon angles or with distinctive composition. Some told stories and others were serene views. Many made us laugh. And again we got the odd photo of Martha’s Vineyard from someone who apparently forgot where he spent his summer vacation.
In this special Autumn Edition, we share with our readers the winners—three this year since there was a tie for second place— and the best of rest. Even more photos can be viewed online at www.YesterdaysIsland.com.
Congratulations to Beverly Miller of Tuxedo, New York, our first place winner this year, and to Audrey David of New York City and Peter Duquette of North Kingston, RI, whose photos were tied for second place.
For the first time this year, we held a public judging to determine the People’s Choice selections. The three computers that John and Kate O’Connor graciously allowed us to set up in the Atlantic Cafe drew a steady stream of participants happy to view and judge. Chris Haines of Milwauke, WI, took first place in People’s Choice, and second place was a tie between Richard Anderson of Philadelphia, PA and Stiliyan Geraskov of Nantucket, MA. A photo by Lisa Whitman of Rowayton, CT was awarded third place. These photographers have won bragging rights for the year and a copy of our new Photo Contest gift CD.
To the many amateur photographers who did not receive a prize or honorable mention: don’t give up, you’ll have another chance to win in 2008. And check online at www.YesterdaysIsland.com, your photo may appear in the Photo Contest Gallery there.
