Famous Gospel Choir to Perform on Nantucket
NCMC/Nantucket School of Music is proud to present the fabulous Jubilee Singers from Westminster Choir College, Rider University, Princeton, New Jersey. For one concert only, this multicultural, multiracial and interdenominational choral ensemble will rouse Nantucket with its exciting and energetic gospel music, beautiful African-American spirituals and folk songs, and secular songs by such musical greats as Duke Ellington, Patti LaBelle, and Quincy Jones. This famous ensemble has performed to critical acclaim in Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops Orchestra, in the New York Apollo Theatre, and with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, in addition to touring throughout the United States.
The choir’s rich repertoire includes such favorites as the spirituals Ride on King Jesus, Motherless Child, Go Tell It on the Mountain, the famous gospel songs Lean on Me, Silver and Gold, and Stomp, as well as music from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. The program will also feature soloists accompanied by an instrumental ensemble of piano, guitar, and drums.
Their conductor, J. Donald Dumpson, is an educator, master keyboardist, conductor, vocal coach, composer, and arranger. He is a member of the Westminster Choir College faculty and has been very active on television and in Broadway productions. He has also worked with such diverse artists as the late Cab Calloway, Sandi Duncan, LL Cool J, Patti LaBelle, Boyz II Men, Bobby McFerrin, Tommy Tune, and Grover Washington Jr.
This concert will be the 7th major benefit the NCMC/Nantucket School of Music has presented on Nantucket. Proceeds from this benefit concert support the school’s scholarship fund and educational programs.
