Bestselling Author to Give Talk Monday
Linda Greenlaw will return to Nantucket Island this Monday, July 30, at 8 pm to speak at the Coffin School on Winter Street about her newest book, Slipknot. This is the author’s newest book and her first novel after writing New York Times Bestsellers The Lobster Chronicles, The Hungry Ocean, and All Fisherman Are Liars and the collection Recipes from a Very Small Island.
Linda Greenlaw resides on Isle au Haut, a tiny island off the coast of Maine, a place her family has called home for many generations. Apart from writing, Greenlaw is one of the few women involved in the commercial fishing industry. She is perhaps the only female ever to captain a swordfishing boat, working the waters from Newfoundland to Brazil, enjoying a number of fisheries including: harpooning and long-lining for sword, dragging for squid, tub-trawling for halibut, and trapping lobster and crab. Presently, Greenlaw works her own boat inshore, lobstering the water surrounding her home on Isle au Haut.
On July 30, Greenlaw will discuss her newest book, Slipknot. Greenlaw heralds an unconquerable heroine, Jane Bunker, in her mystery debut, which finds the former Dade County, FL., chief detective seeking her roots and a slower pace of life in her coastal childhood hometown of Green Haven, Maine. Starting over as a marine investigator for an insurance company, Jane happens upon the body of the town drunk, cod fisherman Nick Dow, who washes ashore beneath the docks of the fish plant. Jane means to assess. The state police do not suspect foul play, but she does. The more Jane digs, the more confused she gets. Only two things are certain: nothing is what it seems; and all the townspeople are in one another's business. Pursuing the murderer, Jane becomes an accidental stowaway aboard a boat that heads into a fierce storm at sea. A cast of memorable New Englanders enhance a fast-moving plot, while the nautical details will engage the fans of Greenlaw's nonfiction books.
A reception and book-signing will follow the talk. The lecture is free of charge to Egan Maritime Foundation/Nantucket Life-Saving Museum members. All others: $5.
