Illustrating Nantucket

The Nantucket New School is pleased to present an exhibition, Illustrating Nantucket, of illustrated works by Nantucket artists.  The show is currently hanging in the Great Hall of the Nantucket New School, 15 Nobadeer Farm Road. Visitors are welcome to visit the school to view the exhibit Monday through Friday from 8 am to 3 pm through June 8.

Curated by Melanie Kotalac, the exhibition includes drawings, sketches, paintings, and graphic designs.  “This is just a small sampling of the works by illustrators who live on Nantucket,” said Kotalac.  “We are grateful for the opportunity to show them at the School.” The artists include: Malcolm Brooks, Rose Gonnella, John Lochtefeld, Sue Riddle, Wendy Roulliard, Clara Urbhan, Nadine Westcott, Jeanne Van Etten, and Barbara Kaufmann-Locke.

Malcolm Brooks is a graphic designer whose work runs from graffiti paintings to t-shirts and brochure design. NNS has one of his T-shirts on view.  Rose Gonnella has illustrated a number of books including Walking Nantucket by Peter Brace.  There are three colored-pencil drawings by Gonnella from the book Summer in the exhibition.  Sue Riddle’s work represents corporate illustration and t-shirt and brochure design.  She illustrated I Gotta Go! I Gotta Go! by Sam Swope, about a monarch butterfly’s efforts to find its way to Mexico.  John Lochtefeld is well-known on Nantucket for his whimsical prints, which are included in the book, Tell Me your Dreams by his late daughter Beth Lochtefeld.  Clara Urbhan has illustrated many books for children including Sock Pirate.  Nadine Wescott is also a prolific children’s book illustrator, and one of her original drawings from Miss Mary Mack is included in the exhibition.  Jeanne Van Etten creates a Nantucket calendar every year using her folk drawings, and, in addition, shows her work in galleries in Providence, RI.  Barbara Kaufmann-Locke works from her studio in Sconset.  She is most frequently recognized for her drawings of people’s homes and her seagull motif, found in every painting.  She has illustrated many books for children about Nantucket, including What's so Special about Nantucket written by Mary Miles.

The Nantucket New School is grateful for a grant to install gallery lighting in the Great Hall from the Nantucket Arts Council. This exhibition and many other future shows will benefit from the improved lighting in the room.

To make an appointment to see the exhibition at a time other than the hours given, please call 508-228-8569.
