Views of India
Thursday evening, from 5 to 8 p.m., Round the Horn will host an opening reception for their newest art exhibit: India - Faces & Places. The show features images by well-known island photographer Garth Grimmer.
Grimmer was born in India and lived near Bangalore till he was in his mid-teens: “I’m the last of the British Empire,” he joked. Grimmer took the stunning images during a trip to India this February—his first since leaving the country at age 15. “It took me a half-century to go back,” he said. “I thought it all would be changed...some things have changed and others are the same they’ve been for centuries.”
The photos Grimmer is exhibiting show a rare insight and perspective that can only come from a photographer who has a deep connection to a place. During their stay, Garth and his wife Jean stayed in the northwest part of the country. “I’m very glad we went…I felt very comfortable being there. I didn’t feel as though I was a tourist…I felt at home.”
Grimmer began taking photographs at a young age. “My father was an artist,” he explained, “…I’ve always had a love of two-dimensional images.” A retired aeronautical engineer, he started taking photographs as a serious avocation about eight years ago. His images reveal an artist’s eye in his composition and use of light. “I used to just throw them in a drawer, but my sons got on me to show them.” During the past four years he’s had shows at the Artists Association and at Made on Nantucket. A selection of his images can be seen at his website: www.NantucketPhotoArt.com.

India - Faces & Places will continue at Round the Horn, 18 Federal Street, through July 3.
