Nantucket's Junior Chef Competition

Cisco Brewery becomes the Nantucket version of “Kitchen Stadium” on Sunday, October 5, when the Nantucket Junior Chef competition debuts as part of the third annual Nantucket Restaurant Week.

From 12 noon to 2 pm, four Nantucket High School seniors — all students of the NHS Culinary Arts Program — will try to dazzle the judges and win the title of Nantucket Junior Chef.  High school seniors Carl Johnson and Brittany Watson, Haley Cabre, and Carla Gomez, last year's winners of the state wide Prostart Culinary Competition are this year’s competitors.  Johnson and Watson will be mentored by professional island chefs from American Seasons, Languedoc Bistro, and Straight Wharf Restaurant while Cabre and Gomez will work with chefs from Oran Mor, The Pearl, and Water Street.

The students will be given three ingredients corn, tomatoes, and squash and required to prepare an appetizer, entrée, and dessert. All the vegetables are donated by Bartlett's Farm.  Participating restaurants are donating other ingredients necessary to prepare the dishes.

Renowned celebrity chefs and food industry luminaries will choose the winning team. All proceeds benefit the Nantucket Culinary Arts Foundation to provide scholarships for Nantucket High School students who are continuing in studies or training in the culinary arts.

Tickets can be purchased at the office of Nantucket Magazine, 17 North Beach Street, or by calling 508-228-1515.  Tickets are $5.00 for students and $20 for adults.

The event is sponsored by Nantucket Magazine, Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce, Plum TV, Bartlett's Farm, and Pellegrino.

The Nantucket Junior Chef Competition caps Nantucket Restaurant Week, an annual event during which participating island restaurants offer three-course dinners for $25 or $45. This year, Restaurant Week continues through October 5. For details, visit www.NantucketRestaurantWeek.com.
