Musical Presented

The Nantucket New School is pleased to present When Worlds Collide, a new musical by teacher Jim Sulzer on Monday, May 5 at 1 p.m., Tuesday, May 6 at 11 a.m., and and Wednesday, May 7 at  6:30 p.m.  NNS families and visitors are welcome for all three performances.

The musical dramatizes the meeting of the Spanish and the Incas in 1532 and will be performed by the Nantucket New School fifth-grade class.  “I chose the subject because the class had been studying the Age of Exploration in Social Studies, and I felt this first meeting offered tremendous dramatic possibilities,” said Sulzer, who has written the music and the lyrics for When Worlds Collide.  “I also liked the challenge of trying to tie in the music with Spanish and Andean idioms.”

The students have enjoyed learning the music and preparing for the performance.  “It’s been satisfying to see that they are also remembering the facts and concepts of the historical period.  It’s like learning the subject from the ‘inside out,’” said Sulzer.

Music and performing are an integral part of the school experience at the Nantucket New School.  “By the time our grade eight students graduate, they have had countless opportunities to perform, sing, or just speak in front of the school community.  Classes with students as young as three are given the opportunity to lead school assemblies and perform with musical choruses,” said Head of School David Provost.  “We are all looking forward to seeing this latest work by Jim and the fifth-grade class.”

Nantucket New School is a co-educational day school serving students in pre-school through grade eight.  Their low student/teacher ratio provides opportunities to create strong student-teacher relationships and foster a family atmosphere where students of different ages are able to interact cooperatively on a regular bais. The school was founded in 1985 with six students and one teacher.  It has grown to about 100 students and more than 15 teachers.
