Do the Right Thing by
Doing the Ride Thing
Walking, riding your bike, and riding the N.R.T.A. shuttle between Monday, June 9 and Sunday, June 15 will make you eligible to win gift certificates from island restaurants, chocolates and fudge, cashmere and other apparel, a clambake for two, and even a new bicycle from Young’s Bicycle Shop—this is, if you register for this year’s “Do the Ride Thing.”
Nantucket Regional Transit Authority, Nantucket Planning and Economic Development Commission, and Nantucket Visitor Services are holding the 10th annual “Do The Ride Thing,” an alternative transportation week event, June 9-15 to encourage islanders to do the right thing by leaving cars at home.
“This event provides people with an incentive to try the shuttle, realize how easy it is and continue to use the shuttle throughout the summer, it also provides easy alternatives to the skyrocketing fuel prices,” said Paula Leary, NRTA Administrator. All NRTA Shuttles are equipped to accommodate two bicycles.
“Nantucket now has nearly 30 miles of bike paths making it a safe and convenient alternative transportation mode,” said Mike Burns, Transportation Planner. The island’s many bike paths are easily accessible from shuttle routes.
When you ride the shuttle obtain a voucher on the bus. If you ride your bike or decide to walk, obtain a voucher from the NRTA Administrative office located at 3 East Chestnut Street or at Visitor Services either from their office at 25 Federal Street or its new annex at 10 Washington Street. Fill out the form, drop off the voucher at one of the above locations, and you will be entered into a drawing to win prizes donated by local businesses with this year’s grand prize a new adult bike donated by Young’s Bike Shop, 6 Broad Street, Steamboat Wharf.
Entries must be received by June 16 at 4 p.m. The drawing will be held June 17 at noon at the new Visitor Services Annex in the Greenhound Building, 10 Washington St. You do not need to be present to win. After the drawing, a ceremony will celebrate the opening of this new annex location.
