Start Summer with a Splash

The Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum has started summer with a splash!  In addition to the opening of the new season-long exhibition, Storm Stories: 1991, An Island Remembers, museum staff has planned quite a few exciting maritime adventures!  On Thursday, June 30, Nantucket enthusiastically welcomes Don Ferris, author and master dive instructor who has trained more than 2,000 people to scuba dive on Cape Cod over the past 25 years and.  In doing so, he has literally has written the book on Cape Cod scuba diving, Cape Cod’s Anthology of Shipwrecks.  Ferris takes readers on a journey from one end of the Cape to the other, describing the sinking, salvage, and modern day state of over 75 different “dive-able” shipwrecks.  The book’s well-documented tales of Cape Cod tell the dramatic stories of men who battled the raging ocean and powerful currents off the Cape’s shores and their daring attempts at rescue and salvage.  There will be an informal reception and book signing at the Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum at 6:00 p.m. followed by a lecture at 7:00 p.m.  The evening is free for Egan Maritime Institute members.  For non-members, the fee is $5; for students it’s just $3.

The summer will stay sailing smoothly with the free weekly screenings of Maritime Movies — back by popular demand!  This year’s lineup includes some classics, along with several titles that tie in with the season-long exhibition.  The first movie in the schedule, showing Monday, June 27, is The Endless Summer: The Search for the Perfect Wave, starring Robert August, Michael Hynson and Lord ‘Tally Ho’ Blears.  Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the film runs about 95 minutes with a short intermission. Popcorn snacks and water will be available for purchase. Visit www.eganmaritime.org for the entire season’s selection of movies. For details about any of this year’s events, call the Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum at 508-228-2505. Maritime Movies are held at 4 Winter Street; the Don Ferris event is at 158 Polpis Road. Be there!
