Nantucket Natives Photo Shoot
Nantucket is not only a great place to live; it’s a great place to be born! Each year, about 80 to 100 babies are born here, with gender numbers split almost evenly between boys and girls. The most births in a single year numbered 149, while the least was 76. Our own Nantucket Cottage Hospital continues to be the site of most of these births, with three primary care physicians being the main deliverers. Women love Dr. Mimi Koehm, whose focus lies in women’s issues. Her biggest passion in medical practice is helping women through the birthing process. Next we have Dr. Greg Hinson, who is not only capable of being the stork, but also of expertly photographing the baby it brings. And Dr. George Butterworth deserves our congratulations, because he delivered his thousandth baby this past spring! Leading surgeon, (and leading tick expert), Dr. Timothy Lepore, performs any urgent cesarean sections. NCH welcomes a visiting doctor who occasionally delivers as well.
If you were once one of these babies, born right here on Nantucket, then listen up! Did you know that there is an exclusive island group just for you? Nantucket Natives invites you to gather for a large group photo at the Nantucket High School athletic stadium this Saturday, July 2, at 9 a.m. Whether you were born on Nantucket nine days ago or ninety years ago, you’re invited as a guest of honor! Participants will be seated in the stadium bleachers, and Nantucket photographer Cary Hazlegrove will capture the portrait from a bucket-lift operated by Nantucket Fire Department. The resulting photo will be used as the cover of this year’s Boston Pops on Nantucket program book. Proceeds from the Pops’ 15th consecutive annual visit will exclusively benefit Nantucket Cottage Hospital! So if you are a native, your participation is an ideal way to give something back to your place of birth!
NCH has a long history of recognizing native-born members of the island community, with an annual event that celebrates recent babies born here and their families.
