Summer Program Kick Off
The Nantucket Autism Speaks Resource Center will begin its 2011 summer program July 6 through August 24, with a myriad of activities for individuals with disabilities, their families and peers. In partnership with many island organizations, individuals of all ages can find something fun to do, including surfing lessons, art classes, Theatre Workshop performances, Nantucket Bike Tours, sailing lessons, Cheryl Fudge Fashion Camp, a Pirate Cruise, Theatre Camp, Family Game Night at the Nantucket Boys & Girls Club, an Ice Cream Cruise and informative lectures.
Most of the activities are free, and many have a limited amount of space, so interested participants should register soon. For details about what’s going on this summer for those with disabilities, contact Kim Horyn, Director, khoryn@autismspeaks.org, 646.341.3043 or visit the website, www.autismspeaks.org/community/resources/nantucket.php.
The mission of the Nantucket Autism Speaks Resource Center is to provide current information and comprehensive resources for families, professionals and the community for the purpose of educating and increasing awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It offers workshops, family activities and opportunities for peer socialization. Most recently, along with NHS English Teacher Liz Reinemo, the Resource Center launched Perfect Pals, a high school mentoring club for students with special needs. The Resource Center also offers a list of experienced babysitters and companions.
All Nantucket Autism Speaks Resource Center programs and activities are open to families of children with all special needs, not limited to autism. The Resource Center is funded by the Nantucket Walk Now for Autism Speaks, scheduled this year for 8:30 am, Saturday, August 20th, at Jetties Beach. Autism Speaks is dedicated to increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders, to funding research into the causes, prevention and treatments for autism, and to advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. It was founded in 2005 by Suzanne and Bob Wright, the grandparents of a child with autism.
