NCH Thrift Store

by Sarah McNamara

Having great style doesn’t need to be expensive!  Since 1929, the Hospital Thrift Shop has been providing islanders with affordable clothing, accessories, art, collectibles, and items for the home.  Run by hardworking volunteers, the proceeds from the store go to support the Nantucket Cottage Hospital.  Although not directly affiliated with the hospital, it has been their charity of choice since the beginning, and last year they raised an amazing $110,000.

Housewares

ClothingStepping into the old house at 17 India Street is like entering a treasure trove in someone’s attic.  The entire building has been converted into a store, the rooms overflowing with great merchandise to sift through.  With racks and racks of gently used clothing, walls covered in art, tables with lamps and serving dishes, and shelves of plates, china, and glassware, you never know what you might discover.  Expensive designer labels can be found amongst the clothing racks, and often for less than $10.

The Hospital Thrift Shop is open from mid-May to mid-October, and accepts donations from early April up until their opening date.  Their hours are 9:30am to 12pm, and 1 to 3:30pm Monday thru Friday, plus 6 to 8pm on Wednesday nights, and Saturdays from 9:30am to 12pm.

Budget-conscious Yesterday’s Island intern, Sarah Teach, models some stylish thrift shop bargains (l to r): white Ann Taylor blazer, $4, paired with a maroon bebe top, $3, and Sigerson Morrison heels, $4; Milo Boston white eyelet dress, $4; leaf print Nine West dress, $7, with Vanessa Noel kitten heel sandals, $2.
