Secret Gardens

The beautiful, new Secret Gardens on Nantucket™ 2008 Calendar and the debut of the Hospital’s newest gift item, note cards, are now available for purchase.  Whether packaged together or separately, the calendar and note cards make the perfect hostess, holiday, or thank you gifts. As an added bonus, the sale of both gift items will benefit the Nantucket Cottage Hospital, the island’s only healthcare facility.

Photographed by Julia Mintz, the 2008 Calendar showcases lovely private gardens on the island.  These privately-owned gardens represent all parts of the island and include such diversity as multi-tiered spaces, arbors, sculptures, single-species, English Rose, and water gardens.

The note cards, also photographed by Julia Mintz, feature five unique images of hydrangeas and are boxed in sets of 20.  Both the calendar and the cards are sold for $14.95 each and are available in island businesses, including the Visitors’ Bureau and the Hospital Thrift Shop, as well as at the Hospital’s Front Desk and on the web site, www.nantuckethospital.org.

Calendar and note card sales benefit Nantucket Cottage Hospital (NCH), with special thanks to contributing sponsors. NCH, the island’s only healthcare facility, is dedicated to providing quality medical care to the Nantucket community on a year-round basis. The Hospital is open 24/7, 365 days of the year, for a population of 10,000 in the off-season that swells to 50,000 during the summer months.  The Hospital’s skilled, professional medical staff, from general practitioners to specialists, offers medical, surgical, maternity, and emergency services and houses numerous specialized departments. The Hospital also retains nearly 50 visiting specialists and partners with numerous Boston-based hospitals. Effective March 1, NCH affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital and Partners HealthCare, Inc.

In addition to the expenses of providing all of these services, one of the Hospital’s challenges is third party payers (insurance companies and Medicare/Medicaid), which reimburse at a less than 100% level.  Last year alone the Hospital lost over $1 million through reduced reimbursement, bad debt, and “free care.”  As a non profit organization, the Hospital relies on fundraising, generated through annual appeals, capital campaigns and annual special events to help off-set these losses as well as generate capital funds for growth. To that end, the purchase of the Secret Gardens Calendar and Note Cards will help to ensure that quality medical care is always here where we need it.
