Art Opening at Sosebee Studio

Old South Wharf has long been known as an island enclave of art.  This weekend, one of Nantucket’s well-known painters will return for a special demonstration, reception, and showing at the Sosebee Studio & Fine Art Gallery on the wharf.

Gallery owners and artists Doug and Debbie Sosebee have been living and painting on Nantucket for decades.  Early last season, after several years showing at and managing Mielko Gallery, they opened their own gallery at 4 Old South Wharf.

The style of the gallery is traditional, and it has a distinct “Nantucket” focus, enabling the Sosebees to share their love of the island’s beauty.  Both Doug and Debbie have spent years capturing Nantucket on canvas. The Sosebees’ work is included in private collections in Europe, Canada, and most of the United States.

The gallery also represents the work of accomplished artists who are island favorites, including Debbie’s father Jack Eastman Brown, Victoria Harvey, Barbara Peavey, Rowenna Anderson, and others, as well as the beautiful jewelry of local resident Deborah Anderson.

“The artists here are all very different, but with complimentary styles,” Deb explains, “we all paint Nantucket and love it”

Paintings by Capizzo

Every Friday, the Sosebees host an opening for one of their artists: this week Barbara Capizzo is featured.  Member of the Nantucket art community since the 1960s, Capizzo will showcase her new watercolors, oils, and acrylics this weekend and will demonstrate her technique.  “When I’m painting, it’s a calm, peaceful time for me...I lose my stress...sometimes I just can’t wait to get my easel out and paint!”

This is Capizzo’s second year at Sosebee Studio & Fine Art Gallery, “I’ve enjoyed being there.”  And the Sosebees are pleased to show her work, “When we found she was letting go of her gallery, we told her we’d be honored to have her work. Her palette is very fresh and her work distinctive,”  Deb explained. The opening reception will be held at Sosebee Gallery from 6 to 8 pm this Friday, July 31.
