Students Compete To Be Junior Chef

Nantucket Restaurant Week ends on Sunday, October 4 with one of the most exciting culinary competitions on the island:  the Nantucket Junior Chef Competition.

From 12 noon to 2 pm, teams of students from the Nantucket High School Culinary Arts Program will compete to see who can create the best three courses highlighting local ingredients.  Each student team is matched with a professional mentor.  Winners will receive scholarships and the title of Nantucket Junior Chef.

NECN TV Diner co-host Jenny Johnson will host the competition, and judges will include James Beard Great Chef Northeast nominees Michael LaScola of American Seasons and Gabriel Frasca of Straight Wharf Restaurant.

This year’s competion will again be held at Cisco Brewers, 5 Bartlett Farm Road.  Spectators are enthusiastically welcomed:  tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for students.  Refreshments will be provided by the Nantucket High School Culinary Program.

All proceeds benefit the Nantucket Culinary Arts Foundation to provide scholarships for Nantucket High School students who are continuing in studies or training in the culinary arts.

The event is sponsored by Nantucket Magazine, Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce, American Seasons, Bartlett's Farm, Cape Air, Sea Grille, and Pellegrino.  For additional details, call 508-228-1515.

Following up Restaurant Week is the Annual Nantucket Chowder Contest.  From 2 to 3:30 pm on Saturday, October 17, participants can vote for their favorite chowder prepared by island chefs.  The cost is $7 for all the chowder you can sample!  Look for the tent in the Grand Union Parking Lot at the beginning of Straight Wharf.
