Our judges had a particularly difficult time choosing the winners this year. Nearly 1,000 photographs were entered into our contestmore than ever beforeand many of them are excellent. We had the usual preponderance of pictures of Brant Point Lighthouse, but this year, most were taken from unusual angles or used Brant Point as a backdrop rather than the main subject. A selection of these can be seen on the cover.
Nature images were in abundancewe received far more shots of birds, flowers, and gardens than we did of sunsets. A number of people who entered the contest saw and photographed the gorgeous moonrise of the glowing full moon on August 17.
The photos spanned all seasons. More winter shots were entered than ever before, though most of them were from the last big snowfall which did not happen last winter.
Congratulations to our winners! Patsy Hogan of New York City took first place with her photo of the area around Altar Rock. Mark Shanahan of NYC and Robert Hurst of New Albany, Ohio tied for second place with their images of Town and the Harbor and of Brant Point Lighthouse from the water.
One image that was a favorite among the judges this year made it to the semi-finals and was eliminated primarily because it was submitted in a format that made it impossible for us to share it with our readers. Please remember to submit digital photos in high resolution (300 dpi) at a size of at least 5 inches by 4 inches. Do not print your digital image on anything other than photo quality paper; in fact, don’t print them at allsend them in on a CD.
To the many amateur photographers who did not receive a prize or honorable mention: don’t give up, you’ll have another chance to win in 2009. And check online at www.yesterdaysisland.com, your photo may appear in the Photo Contest Gallery posted there.
